Drill/Chimpanzee Conservation

The Drill Rehabilitation & Breeding Centre or Drill Ranch primarily conserves the lesser known drill monkey (a relative of the mandrill). These endangered primates are often hunted as bush meat in the wild. Illegally held drills orphaned by hunting are often given in by the local communities or handed over after seizure by authorities.
The Drill Ranch also takes in rescue Nigeria - Cameroon chimpanzees (the rarest sub-species of chimpanzee) and boasts the second largest chimpanzee enclosure in the world!
Sadly due to deforestation pressures, an ever rising rate of bush meat hunting and a local government that seems to be actively working against conservation the Drill Ranch are being forced to halt their breeding programmes by way of 3 - 5 year contraceptive implants.
